SEIU's first woman President sets out future‏

Mary Kay Henry – the SEIU’s first woman President – has set out an agenda for the union that focuses on private sector workers and talking to other unions about organising them. In particular she is seeking to have ‘listen and learn’ conversations with other unions.

Putting union solidarity and co-operation first, SEIU’s new leadership team working with the new President are preparing to organise in new occupational sectors such as taxi drivers and freelance writers.

This new emphasis on repairing the splits in the US union movement has to be good news for all American workers. The SEIU remains one of the fastest growing unions in the world and its political influence has extended beyond that exercised by other trade unions in the US.
